Cannabis Infuses into Portland’s Wellness Industry

In outdoorsy and active Portland, Ore., recreational cannabis use is uplifting the wellness community. In this health-oriented city, the relaxing, mind-opening, pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties of marijuana are used to enhance everything from workouts to massages.

Portland’s reputation as one of the most active cities in America hasn’t changed with the state’s legalization of marijuana in 2014. If anything, it’s achieved a whole new dimension. Case in point: Buddha Bud Yoga, where students of all levels bring their own bud to smoke and share, then practice an hour-long flow led by instructor Karli Janine Erickson. Make & Mary, producers of CBD beauty products and cannabis aromatherapy candles purported to increase focus and relaxation, hosts BYOW (bring your own weed) “Lifted” yoga sessions several times a year, along with classes on creative endeavors like tincture making.

Looking for something more high energy? Mary Jane Fonda events combine a body-positive dance-inspired aerobic workout with breaks for CBD joints and cannabis mocktails on the “smoke bus.”

In May 2019 the Wellness Farmers Market started at Coalition Brewery, operating every Sunday through October 2019. As Oregon’s first weekly CBD market, the Wellness Farmers Market features over 10 vendors with CBD tinctures, edibles, lotions, pet products and more.

To soothe sore muscles, athletes can stop into one of famed Tour de France winner Floyd Landis’ three bike-themed dispensaries, which sell THC- and CBD-infused lotions, or book an appointment at Little Amsterdam Wellness Center or Blue Marigold for a cannabis-centric massage using CBD-infused oils. Locally made Hana Medicinals offers balms and sachets of wellness tonic powders you can tuck into a gym bag.

Portland’s Empower Botanicals has developed a strong reputation for its Black Label THCA- and CBD-infused pain-relieving soaking salts, lotions and oils, perfect for post-workout recovery.

Clearly there’s more to Portland’s cannabis scene than dispensaries and head shops. Here in the City of Roses, weed, workouts and wellness go hand-in-hand.
